We are deep into the Pentecost season, and it’s easy to lose focus on the work Jesus continues to do through His Word in the church. We often turn God’s gifts into gods and love the gift rather than the Giver of the gift. They are but temporary gifts, and we should rather enjoy receiving the true gifts of life: Christ’s Word and Sacraments. For the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that they give cause us to live forever when “life, Goods, fame, child, and wife” are taken from us. “Though these all be gone, Our vict’ry has been won; The Kingdom ours remaineth” (LSB 656:4).
