Looming large over 1 Corinthians is the matter of quarreling and divisions. Paul states this right up front in chapter 1, and it reappears throughout the book. The antidote to divisions is to return to basics. God works through “what is foolish in the world,” “what is weak in the world,” and “even things that are not” (1:27–28). Away with pride that competes for status and power! That’s not how the Lord’s kingdom works. Indeed, when Paul stepped into the Corinthian context, he “decided to know nothing among [them] except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (2:2).
