Deuteronomy is, of course, Moses’ final oration to Israel before his death—specifically to the “next generation” of Israelites, the children of those who came out of Egypt as adults. For forty years, Moses has been God’s prophet to the people, though, in fact, much of the speaking was actually done by his brother Aaron (Ex 4:10–16). Now it is time to pass the prophetic mantle to another, to Jesus, Prophet and Savior.
